TOday: VERMONTERS FROM EVERY SENATE DISTRICT TO GATHER IN MONTPELIER TO DELIVER 1,000 PERSONAL LETTERS IN SUPPORT OF CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS TO SENATORS AND 12,000 PETITION SIGNATURES TO GOVERNOR SHUMLIN’S OFFICE

Press Conference Wednesday in the Cedar Creek Room with Gun Owners, Concerned Vermonters

81% of Vermont Voters Support Background Checks

Tomorrow, Vermonters from every senate district will gather in Montpelier to lobby legislators in support of a bill to close the dangerous loophole in Vermont’s background check system that allows criminals, domestic abusers, and the seriously mentally ill to buy guns over the internet and at gun shows without a background check.

Constituents will meet with their senators to deliver over 1,000 personal letters in support of the upcoming criminal background check bill. They will also deliver 12,000 petition signatures of Vermonters asking for action on this issue to Governor Shumlin’s office.

The National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) has worked to block thousands of gun sales to domestic abusers and other dangerous people at licensed gun dealers, but a loophole remains in Vermont’s laws that allows them to buy guns from unlicensed sellers over the internet and at garage sales with no questions asked.
