GunSense Vermont Statement on the Pownal School Gun Incident and the Importance of Safe Storage
Incidents like the one in Pownal are a stark reminder that safe firearm storage is not optional - it’s essential. Firearms should always be stored unloaded, locked, and separate from ammunition, especially in homes where children live or visit. Too often, unsecured guns lead to tragedies that are entirely preventable. Vermont recently passed a safe storage law that makes it illegal for a child to access a negligently stored firearm, but laws alone aren’t enough - we need ongoing education and vigilance from all gun owners.
Responsible gun ownership means taking every precaution to ensure firearms don’t fall into the wrong hands - especially a child’s. The good news is there are simple, effective tools like gun safes, lockboxes, and cable locks that save lives. We’re grateful no one was harmed in this case, but it should serve as a wake-up call to all of us about the importance of safe storage in every home.
