About GunSense Vermont
GunSense Vermont is a statewide organization dedicated to preventing gun violence and advancing responsible, evidence-based gun laws that keep Vermont communities safe. Through legislative advocacy, public education, coalition building, and grassroots organizing, GunSense works to reduce harm while respecting Vermont’s traditions and values.
GunSense operates through two affiliated entities:

GunSense Vermont Education Fund (C3) – public education and charitable activities
The Executive Director position serves both entities.
Position Summary
The Executive Director is the chief staff leader of GunSense Vermont and reports to the combined C3/C4 Boards of Directors, with Board Presidents serving as primary liaisons.
This is a part-time (20 hours/week) salaried position, supervising a half-time Organizer.
The Executive Director leads organizational strategy, legislative advocacy, fundraising, operations, and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership & Operations

Manage day-to-day operations of the C3 and C4

Develop annual goals with the Board

Maintain organizational systems and vendor relationships

Ensure compliance with nonprofit, campaign finance, and tax requirements
Budget & Fundraising

Develop and manage the annual budget

Create and implement a fundraising plan

Grow small-dollar and major donor support
-
Expand recurring contributions

Oversee database management and grant reporting
Legislative Advocacy

Develop and advance legislative priorities
-
Monitor legislation and advise on strategy

Meet with lawmakers and stakeholders

Coordinate testimony and action alerts
-
Oversee lobbying compliance
Communications & Engagement

Provide regular member updates
-
Build and grow statewide supporter lists
-
Organize member meetings and town halls
-
Draft press releases and public statements
-
Serve as a spokesperson as needed
Political & Electoral Engagement (C4)

Oversee candidate questionnaires and forums
-
Support endorsement processes
-
Conduct issue-based electoral engagement consistent with legal guidelines
Coalition Building

Build relationships with partner organizations

Represent GunSense in statewide and national coalition spaces
Ideal Qualifications

Experience in nonprofit leadership, advocacy, or political organizing

Treasurer Position Description (Volunteer)
Position Summary
The Treasurer serves as the chief financial oversight officer of GunSense Vermont and is responsible for safeguarding the financial integrity of both affiliated entities:

The Treasurer helps ensure sound financial management, accurate reporting to the Board of Directors, and compliance with state and federal nonprofit, tax, and campaign finance regulations.
This is a volunteer Board position requiring strong attention to detail, financial literacy, and comfort reviewing nonprofit financial information.
The Treasurer works closely with the Executive Director, Board Presidents, outside accountant, and any contracted financial professionals.
Core Responsibilities
Financial Oversight & Governance

Provide financial oversight for both the C3 and C4 entities.

Monitor organizational cash flow, reserves, and financial sustainability.

Review bank statements and financial records regularly.

Ensure clear separation and proper allocation of funds between C3 and C4 activities.

Assist the Board in reviewing and approving the annual budget.
-
Advise the Board on financial risks, opportunities, and long-term planning.
Financial Operations & Internal Controls
-
Provide oversight of financial processes managed by staff, including donation processing, bill payment, and recordkeeping.
-
Work with the Executive Director to ensure appropriate financial controls and procedures are in place.

Coordinate with staff and financial advisors regarding gifts of securities or other investment assets.
-
Ensure financial records and documentation are organized and available for audit or review.
(Note: Day-to-day tasks such as check collection, deposits, and donor database entry are handled by staff.)
Reporting & Board Communication

Prepare or review financial reports for presentation to the Board on a monthly or quarterly basis.

Provide summaries of key financial indicators including:

Income and expenses
-
Budget vs. actual performance
-
Cash position
-
Major financial obligations
-

Ensure the Board has timely and accurate financial information to support decision-making.
Legal Compliance & Tax Filings

Liaise with the organization’s outside accountant to prepare and review:
-
IRS Form 990 filings (C3 and C4)
-
State tax filings
-
Any required campaign finance filings
-

Ensure timely filing of required documents including:
-
1099 forms
-
Vermont Secretary of State annual reports
-
Other required state compliance filings
-
-
Confirm compliance with nonprofit, tax, and campaign finance regulations.
-
Assist with any financial documentation required for grant compliance.
Time Commitment
Estimated 4–7 hours per month, with additional time during:

Annual budget preparation

Tax filing season
-
Audit or grant reporting periods
Qualifications
Ideal candidates will have:

Experience in finance, accounting, bookkeeping, or nonprofit financial management.

Comfort reviewing financial statements and budgets.

Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

Familiarity with nonprofit tax compliance (preferred but not required).

Commitment to GunSense Vermont’s mission.
Role in Governance
