Long-Term Goal: Background Checks on All Gun Sales

Right now background checks are legally required at federally licensed dealers but not required for online unlicensed sales (like on Armlist.com), auctions, garage sales, flea markets, etc. Why should some gun sales be treated differently than others? Background checks should be required on all sales so it isn’t easy for criminals to get weapons.

When the background check loophole was closed in Colorado, 112 prohibited individuals were denied guns because of background checks on unlicensed sales in the first 6 months.

Given the basic law of supply and demand, having to buy a gun on the black market costs more than buying a gun from the vast unlicensed market, making it harder for criminals.

46% fewer women are shot to death by intimate partners in the states that already have this law in place, based on a state-by-state comparison of FBI data from 2008-2012.
